The Runners
A truck drove on scorched ground, through what was once a city. Everything was silent, only the driving of the truck could be heard as the truck drove through the city. That was if you could call it a city, now it was just an abundance of buildings abandoned, left to crumpled and fall with age much like the legacy of Viros.
Inside the truck were two people. An elderly man in his early seventies, with red eyes, grey hair and a scruffy grey beard. He was in good shape for his age, however he looked tired as the dark rings under his eyes seemed to only get darker with every passing moment.
Next to him was a much younger looking woman, she looked to be about twenty five, her blond hair long and her eyes green. She didn’t look well. A bandage was tied around her right arm and neck, as if she had broken it.
They didn’t speak much as the drove. They didn’t even seem to know where they were going, they were just driving, through what looked like a forsaken world.
“David…” The woman said looking over at the driver. She sounded weak, her skin seemed pale, her voice seemed to lose energy with every word spoken.
The driver didn’t take his eyes off the road he just sighed softly. “Yeah Jane?” He asked. He didn’t sound frustrated or weak, just tired. His eyes flickered down to the gas tank. Half a tank left.
“I miss them.” Jane said looking out the window to the falling city. The late afternoon sun beat down on the city hard. “I miss Riachi, I miss Fleur, I miss Caroline, Aiolos, Sarah, Green, Luna. I miss them all.” Jane said sadness flooding into her weak voice.
“I know.” David replied quietly. It had been ten years since all of this happened. There group had been much larger than just the two of them. However the rest of them sadly passed away.
“I sometimes wish we died along with the base, at least that way we wouldn’t be in this fucking mess.” Jane said gritting her teeth. “This fucking infection had to come up and do this.” Jane said, she wanted to hit something David could tell. But she didn’t, she needed to keep her strength.
The infection. No one knew where it came from, it just came and it was unstoppable. It infected everyone and everything. It came and took over New York, then Washington then it spread throughout America and then the world.
The infection took everyone transforming their bodies into a black tar like creature, however it didn’t kill it’s victim it only feasted on their soul. However one would think these creatures could still be killed however it wasn’t that simple. This infection, unlocked it’s victims Magi once it was in full control, causing most of these infected to be extremely dangerous.
Jane was infected. However it wouldn’t take her over, it was probably because Jane was stubborn and didn’t want to have her body taken over by the infection. She was lucky, however that wasn’t the same for the rest. Friends and family, they fell to the infection.
Sarah took off her own arm to save herself but died a couple days later because of low supplies and blood loss. They buried her somewhere, all of them gave their final goodbyes.
Fleur died protecting Yokov, she sacrificed herself only to be ripped apart by a horde. This attempt at saving Yokov was a failure as he was soon infected and turned.
Green fell fighting off a horde after he lost Luna who ran at the horde in a fit of anger. Luna disappeared and the next time they saw Green he was infected and ripping apart a dear.
Aerlina had seemed to disappear before the infection.
Khaaxzi tried to flee by swimming through the seas, however after he left the coast he was dragged under by infected.
Caroline died by trying to save a civilian only to be taken down by an infected with wings.
Riachi shot himself in the head after the base had been taken over.
Aiolos was one of the last, who gave his own life so Jane and David could run.
And that’s where it left them. David and Jane the lone survivors. Although that’s not to say they were better off. Jane couldn’t use magic because it was being leached off her by the infection and David had lost friends and his last bit of family, he couldn’t sleep, he didn’t eat or drink much either.
They both sat in silence from there on and continued to drive.
The sun was setting. The truck by now was in a desert like area, probably once a grass field but that had changed. An orange glow washed over the desert. Jane was asleep but David was still awake and driving. He had a quarter tank left. David sighed and looked back up at where he was driving. Something then caught his eye. A blur of black just passed the car. David looked at his mirror and saw one. An infected.
It looked at the car. It knew they were there. David quickly slammed the break, causing the car to judder, shaking Jane awake.
“What!?” Jane asked out of shock, but David didn’t answer he just got out of the car, slowly. “Wait David?” Jane asked, yet he didn’t reply he just slowly got out and reached for the inside of the trunk. He soon pulled out what seemed to be a spade.
The infected saw him and started to approach, in jagged and unhuman like movement. David started to approach slowly. The infected suddenly broke out into a sprint towards David, spikes growing all over it’s body. It came close to David threw out it’s hand towards him, a long spike quickly growing and going for David’s heart. However it stopped as David swung the spade. The spade lodged itself into the infected’s neck. David quickly kicked it off the spade and ran back up to the car chucking the spade in the back. David got back in the driver's seat quickly starting up the truck. He looked at Jane, her face was pale with fear.
“What’s wrong?” David asked
“Look.” Jane said pointing out of her window, and there was a horde of them approaching. David went pale and slammed his foot on the break. But the truck wouldn’t move. David stomped his foot down over and over again, but the truck wouldn’t budge. David looked back at Jane who wasn’t in the car, but instead outside walking towards the horde. David went even paler and jumped out. He looked in the trunk and there was the spade and a shotgun he picked up on their travels. He picked both up and started to run for Jane.
Jane was calm as she walked towards the horde. She wasn’t fazed but the horrors that approached her. Jane stopped in her tracks and then tore off the bandage, revealing her right arm. Black and tar like. She sighed and looked up the horde. She didn’t have much left but she had to make it count. She was a champion after all. She closed her eyes as the horde approached her. When she opened her eyes an infected lunged at her, however Jane just grabbed it and threw it to the ground, crushing it. Armour suddenly formed on her and wings formed on her back. She looked at the horde her eyes bright white.
Then the sound of a shotgun came from behind her and an infected had it’s head blown to pieces. David stood there holding a shotgun and a spade, breathing rapidly and looking at Jane with fear.
“Go.” Jane said a small grin forming on her face as she looked at David. David wanted to say so much to Jane but he couldn’t, he knew he had to leave. He knew this was where they had to leave each other.
David nodded and ran back.
Jane looked back at the horde her grin soon faded as she summoned her sword. Her armour became reinforced.
“This is for everyone you took from us.” Jane said holding her ground as the horde approached. In the distance she could hear David running away.
“Goodbye David.” Jane said to herself as the horde came towards her. This was the end for her.
But it wasn’t the end for David.
It wasn’t the end.
