While Devon did make his best attempt, and went a good bit faster than during the first run, the pain in his back limited himself from pushing past his limit. He kept managed to run past one man, leaving him at 8th place. He did not perform great, but at least he was in the upper half of the group.
"My grandmother would do this course in half the time it took you snails! Get to the barracks and wipe that grime off your pathetic excuses for faces!"
And that was it. The end of the exercise. The end of the 'training'. They would have time to rest now, and by tomorrow they would be assigned their ranks, weaponry and gear, as well as their first duties. The group started to move towards the barracks, exhausted from today.
Training in the military wasn't all that tough. In between the training people already got in public school, and the meritocratic ranking system the armies used, it was no big deal to climb in position. You just had to survive your duties.
