Name: Iyov
Species: Decapodian
Age, gender and element: 130, Male,
VoidFaction: Aethari Invictus
Appearance: Iyov is imposing, standing at a full 6'4 with wide shoulders and sharpened teeth. His exoskeleton is a dark orange, nearly umber, while his four bright blue eyes shine with a strange kindness-- flecks of dark blue reflecting light like stars.
Background:
Iyov is a member of Aethari Invictus, of the race known as the Decapodians. He is from a clutch of 2 made of himself and his sister, Asenat, who was precisely 1 minute and 12 seconds before him-- a fact that Asenat lorded over him constantly. They were both sent to the same academy, attending the same lessons and learning the same skills. His sister was a natural warrior, far stronger and faster than the rest of her peers, her education streamlined by their superiors. By the time they were 20, Asenat had secured herself a position as a promising young soldier while Iyov barely made it through the academy.
Despite this, Asenat never mocked or insulted his lack of progress. In fact she made it her personal mission to track down any who dared torment him. Iyov protested this, as he had grown tall and old enough to protect himself, but she never stopped. Over the next decades, iyov proved to be a mediocre warrior. While he had eyes sharper than most and trained constantly, his body lacked the strength and finesse to keep up with his peers. He is more often assigned to more ceremonial or mundane duties, such as combat patrols and pest exterminations.
Iyov was 103 when he received the news of his sister's death. According to reports, the fleet had suffered an incursion of Void entities due to a malfunctioning dimension drive. Asenat had led a detachment to face down the monstrosities and retake the engine room, valiantly striking down an Umbral before succumbing to her wounds. As per her final request her soul was transferred to a weapon for Iyov, as she desired to protect him from beyond the grave.
Due to his lackluster performance as a soldier but imposing stature, Iyov was assigned to the civilian populace. He would act in tandem with the law enforcement to guarantee that order would be maintained, as well as raise morale and spark greater nationalism. In this he excelled, mingling with members from all castes and proving surprisingly good with others. He spent the years the great works and legends of the Aetheri's illustrious past, often reading the more adventurous and exciting stories with children. In all his years of work, Iyov only needed to fire his weapon a handful of times. Preserving his sister's soul far longer than would be expected for his line of work.
He was assigned to the latest expedition to continue his work with the supply ships and shuttles of the fleet, as well as stand by for possible reinforcements. Iyov was happy to do so, overjoyed to finally witness one of the legendary events that kept the Aetheri Invictus living after all this time.
And then, within hours of the ships beginning their work, a Thing appeared on his ship.
It wore the face of his sister, sharing the same brilliant yellow eyes and the same kind smile. He knew her from the cracks and scars on her exoskeleton. But Asenat was housed in his rifle, speechless as she too saw the It. And then It turned and decimated an living complex with a wave of energy, rendering hundreds of civilians into a fine red mist. No matter how many plasma bolts and cannons fired off, the Thing only continued it's massacre-- indiscriminate from young and old, male or female, armed and unarmed. Every cry for mercy met with cold indifference. And all around Iyov.
Iyov does not know why that Thing did not kill him, that Thing wearing his sister's face with it's smile so sweet and it's hands so bloodied with the lives of innocents. But he knew that to attack or to stay would mean death, and so he fled to the escape shuttles. Shepherding what few civilians he could find as he sprinted forward, even carrying wounded in his arms. By the time he made it to the launch bay, only a single operational ship hung above the blue planet below, the air ringing with screams-- both from the tormented souls of the ship and the dying. Iyov launched the escape shuttle, only to crash against the ruined remains of the fleet. The twisted bodies of ships and escape pods and fighters covered the horizon, damaging Iyov's craft and sending it hurtling towards Earth. Crash landing somewhere in Asia.
In the months since the invasion, Iyov has tried to keep what few survivors of the fleet alive. Singing songs and telling stories, trying to keep the injured and traumatized survivors from losing hope. Stranded in a strange Hidden Village, he looks for a way to escape-- both the planet and the strange unending forest around them.
